About Neil Smith

Four Decades Inside the Game.

Player. Scout. General manager. Executive. Broadcaster. Storyteller. Neil Smith's career touches almost every corner of professional hockey — and a chapter of New York sports history that fans have not forgotten.

Neil Smith is a Stanley Cup–winning hockey executive, broadcaster, analyst, and podcast host best known as the President and General Manager of the New York Rangers team that captured the 1994 Stanley Cup — ending one of the most famous championship droughts in professional sports.

Born January 9, 1954 in Toronto, Ontario, Smith's hockey life began as a player and student-athlete. He attended Western Michigan University, where he became an All-American defenseman and later earned recognition in the school's athletic honors. He was drafted by the New York Islanders in 1974 and went on to build a career that moved from playing to scouting, development, team building, executive leadership, broadcasting, and hockey media.

Detroit & The AHL

Smith's early front-office career included scouting work with the New York Islanders and an important developmental role within the Detroit Red Wings organization. As general manager of the Adirondack Red Wings, Detroit's AHL affiliate, he helped guide the club to Calder Cup championships in 1986 and 1989. Those years established Smith as a sharp evaluator of talent, a builder of winning organizations, and an executive capable of connecting scouting, development, roster construction, and championship results.

The Rangers, 1989–2000

In 1989, Smith became General Manager of the New York Rangers. Over the next decade, he became one of the defining figures in modern Rangers history. His leadership culminated in the 1993–94 season, when the Rangers won the Stanley Cup for the first time in 54 years. The championship remains one of the most celebrated moments in New York sports history, and Smith's role as the executive architect of that team remains central to the story.

Throughout his career, Smith earned recognition as one of hockey's respected executives — Executive of the Year from The Hockey News for 1991–92 and from The Sporting News for 1993–94. His championship résumé spans the Adams Cup, multiple Calder Cups, and the Stanley Cup itself.

Beyond New York

After his Rangers tenure, Smith continued to work across professional hockey, including a brief role as General Manager of the New York Islanders, work with the Dallas Stars, team ownership and executive roles in the ECHL, and hockey analysis for major sports networks. He has appeared as a broadcaster and analyst for ESPN, TSN, Versus, NHL Network, and SiriusXM.

Today

Today, Neil Smith brings his direct, experienced, and historically informed hockey perspective to fans through NHL Wraparound, a podcast hosted with longtime ESPN/NHL veteran Vic Morren. The show offers commentary on current NHL issues, trades, league developments, team building, and the history of the game — from people who have lived it from the inside.
